Before testing Inlinks.com I read a few reviews. They were all very good, but this isn’t surprising since InLinks has a strong affiliate program. After using a coupon for In Links I set up my account with about a dozen links. When they came through and I was able to see them I was disapointed. While I needed a specific two word anchor text I was only give a one word anchor link. Then the anchor links were odd and, even though the same word, were often used in different context and had different meanings.

If you want to try InLinks you may get lucky and get good links – I didn’t. I’m cancelling my links after this month. I know you should test something like this for at least three months, but those links are so poor it’s not worth the test. I can get better links from article marketing, which is also much cheaper in the long run. If you want to test them out do a search for a coupon code so you can test them for less money.

Wordtracker is a great tool for SEOs and anyone wanting to improve their site. The results are not perfect, but they do give the user a very good idea what folks are searching for. Wordtracker is the best tool for pointing you in the right direction to learn what people are searching for in your industry or area. If you have a franchise Website you can use Wordtracker to learn that terms like “food franchise” and “oil change franchise” are being searched for and you can learn how many times each day they are being searched as well as the competition for those terms.

I get a report from Wordtracker via email that list the top 1000 keyword phrases searched for recently. It’s interesting to see how this list actually causes pages and Websites to be created. A recent top search is free ringback tones. Since Wordtracker listed that phrase there have been many new pages, sites, and blogs built around that phrase by those hoping to cash in on the searches. Most of the sites are junk of course and will never rank and the ones that do rank will be short lived before Google pulls them.

At Adtech 2007 I walked up to the Wordtracker booth and shook the hands of the guys from WT and thanked them for their product and told them how it has made me look good many times in the past few years. If you have a Website I strongly recommend Wordtracker. It will make you look good too.

I built a site on a highly searched for topic and built the best site with the best information. For months Google kept me number one for targeted keywords. Then they dropped me to the second page. I’m sure they will put me back on the top again, but why remove me if they are only to put me back up later? Maybe it’s to check out how other sites will do, and that’s fine if those other sites were of any quality. The problem is they’re not. The sites on the first page really stink. Some are not even Websites but search results pages from other search engines. It just doesn’t make sense. I guess we still have a long way to go in perfecting Internet search.

If you check Wordtracker’s list of top searched for terms you’ll see that “SEO” is showing up in the top 100 now. That’s wild to me because it should have been there a long time ago, but only in the last few months has it gotten the respect it deserves. Executives and Web managers are just catching on and wanting SEO. Of course, few of them really understand it.

I worked as an SEO manager for about five years at two different firms. One was a private company that was based solely online and the other was an interactive marketing agency. I dealt with a lot of the same issues then as current SEO gurus deal with now like why isn’t the client’s site ranking number one after only six weeks of SEOing?

I’ve tried to separate myself somewhat from SEO in the last year or so. Not because I have a problem with SEO, but just because I wanted to explore some other areas like Web management. Despite my efforts I keep getting pulled back in. There are few that have the natural talent for optimizing Web pages and those of us that have it are in high demand and the powers that be refuse to let us out. It’s a lot like the mafia.

Now that SEO is finally on the radar the demand is going to increase even more. If you are looking for and SEO technician be careful because I’ve seen a lot of resumes that list SEO as a skill set when all they did was create a few Meta tags. If you want to learn SEO I say go for it. It looks like they’ll be work for you for several years to come.

To get the most out of your site links you should use the nofollow attribute. Below I’ve laid out the basics of the nofollow attribute. There is a lot of debate over the value and implementation of this attribute so I welcome any suggestions and ideas from readers. Your comments will help others.

What is a nofollow attribute?
The nofollow attribute (usually called: nofollow tag) is a simple attribute that you place within your page links that informs the search engines (Google mostly) that you don’t want them to follow that link.

What’s the value of a nofollow tag?
Every link on your site has weight and can influence search engine results. If you have hundreds of page links pointing out of your site you will be passing your site’s weight away from your site and giving to other sites. Sometimes you might want to pass weight, and anchor text links, to other sites, but sometimes you just want to acknowledge a site. That is a time to add the nofollow tag in your link code.
You should also place nofollow tags on links within your own that link to pages you don’t want to show up in search engine results. Do you really want to waste your site’s weight on your disclaimer page?

How do I add a nofollow tag?
Simply include rel=”nofollow” in your link between the a and href
<a rel=”nofollow href=”link”>anchor text</a>

If you’ve been struggling to get your site ranked well in Google this simple fix might help your rankings. It’s only one of dozens of factors that can influence rankings, but one you shouldn’t overlook.

I first started in the online marketing world as a Search Engine Optimization manager. Back then nobody, including folks in the industry, had any idea what SEO was. SEO had a cool name, but the concepts were fairly easy. The hardest work was taking the time to do the things that made the difference like changing thousands of Meta tags, gathering thousands upon thousands of links, and optimizing content. Those things are still important, but they won’t push and keep you at the top of the search results for long. To compete in the ever-growing Internet you must evolve. Someone that only practices traditional SEO is going to be left in the dust.

To compete organically in today’s Internet marketplace you must combine more than on page factors and external links to beat your competition. You need to use social media tactics, word of mouth, and any other channel you can access.

Learn SEO. Use SEO. But don’t forget all the other options at your fingertips or soon you will be left behind while your competition thrive. Sign up for an RSS feed and keep checking back as I show you how to promote your Web site and get the most out of every dollar you spend and every minute you work.
