Where do you get the time? was asked of the author of Mountain Wings.

Someone came to my house today who receives MountainWings.

They said, “I really enjoy MountainWings but where do you get
the time to write it?”

They know that I run two businesses, President of one and
Executive V. P. of another. Both are substantial businesses and
substantial responsibilities.

I am also the pastor of a church.

I also have a family (that may be the more demanding job).

They wanted to know, “where did I get the time to write
MountainWings?”

There are two points that I want you to understand,
the first one I will explain today.

“The more you do, the more you can do.”

There is an old adage that goes,
“If you want something done, give it to a busy person.”

By normal logic this would seem backwards.

It would appear that if you want to get something done you
should give it to someone who has plenty of free time on their
hands, someone whose schedule is open, someone with little
responsibility and ample room for more.

That would be the normal logic.

The truth is the reverse.

If you want something done, give the job to someone who is
already doing a lot. Don’t give it to someone who has a lot of
free time on their hands and is just doing enough to get by.

Let me give you some simple examples on a personal level.

Who do you find in educational classes that are beyond mandatory
or college?

Check that crowd, it will usually be those with a lot of
knowledge already.

Go to a gym in July.
Don’t go at the beginning of the year, you’ll mostly find the
New Year’s resolution crowd that will be long gone in two
months.

Who will you find that exercises the most and the hardest?
It will usually be those who are already in shape and
NEED the exercise the least. Those who exercise the most are
able to exercise even more. Those who are sedentary, get
softer and softer and are able to do less and less.

Go to a finance seminar. I’m not talking about a multi-level
marketing get rich quick seminar but a real honest financial
seminar on how to handle, invest and make more money. Who will
you find? Generally you will find those who are already
handling their money far better than average and have far more
than average.

There is a simple spiritual principle that reads,

“To those that have they shall get more added to them. To those
that don’t have, even what they seem to have will be taken away
from them.” Jesus said that, not me.

I didn’t say it but I understand it.

I majored in chemistry.

It’s called Markonikov’s law in Chemistry.

The law is about hydrogen atoms and the carbon molecules that
the unattached hydrogen atoms move to. Markonikov’s law states,
”them that has gits.” The free hydrogen atoms go to the carbons
that already have the most hydrogen atoms.

The world puts it this way, “the rich get richer and the poor
get poorer.” It’s always been and will always be that way
whether you like it or not.

You may not think it’s fair but it’s the way it is and will be.

The thing is, it doesn’t apply just to money.
It applies to anything.

Those who have an abundance of it already have a much greater
probability of getting more than someone who doesn’t have any.

Anything

You name it: love, money, sex, health, peace, confidence,
spiritual enlightenment, etc., it applies. Anything

That also holds true for the negative things.
Those who are rich in negative things get even more negative
things.

So why am I harping on that?

To simply tell you this. . . GET BUSY!!!

When you start doing more, more things will come to you.
If you only do what the average does, you will get what the
average gets. That makes sense doesn’t it?

SO GET BUSY!!!

On Saturday my wife and I got up early and went to a local mall to buy Christmas gifts. We found some great gifts in the Ralph Lauren store so I headed to the counter to purchase our finds. Before I paid the guy behind the register asked for my name. I gave it to him. Then he asked for my address and I remembered how they do this at the Polo stores. I declined.

I’m sure that most shoppers provide their address, and I don’t have a problem with companies gathering marketing information, it can be beneficial to everyone if the marketing is targeted well (and a recent visitor is well targeted), I would just like to see it gathered differently. Hand me an address form and ask me to fill it out and drop it in the mail for the chance to win a $500 gift card, or whatever. Just give me something in return to fulfill my human need for instant gratification.

I had big plans to put together a new Rubbermaid shed this weekend. I used a commission check I had saved just to buy a quality shed, went to Home Depot and spent twenty more dollars renting a van to bring the shed home, and used up a lot of muscle and sweat dragging the heaving box through my yard. On Sunday morning I woke up early and went outside in the cold to put together my new Rubbermaid Big Max shed. I took each part out of the large box and started assembling my new toy when I learned that an important part had been left out – the bag of screws to hold it all together.

I looked and looked to make sure the bag wasn’t strategically taped to the underside of a panel and to make sure it hadn’t fell under something. It wasn’t anywhere to be found. The person that put the box of parts together had left out the most important piece. The box was sealed in plastic when I bought it so I know it wasn’t removed in the store either.

My Sunday plans were wasted and now the two weekends I had free to clean out my garage are also behind. I’m not furious or even all that mad, but I am disappointed with Rubbermaid and the person they trusted to do his job correctly. Now I’m going to have to spend time on the phone with Rubbermaid (and please let it be someone that speaks English and has a little common sense) using up their paid resources and my limited time to try to figure out what is missing, and then have them mail it to me (again at their expense cutting into Rubbermaid’s profits).

You and I both know what probably happened. An underpaid assembly worker didn’t feel like walking across the warehouse to get more screw bags, or either just didn’t care enough to even drop a bag in the box. He probably even knew that the bag was missing, but it wouldn’t be his problem once the error was discovered so he didn’t care. How many other boxes left the warehouse that day without the needed parts? How many will be returned to Rubbermaid from Home Depot cutting deeper into Rubbermaid’s profits? How much would it have cost to ensure that the guy packing the box did his job correctly the first time? Was he really underpaid or just careless? Either way it’s going to cost money, and this isn’t the time to be wasting money.

Yesterday I noticed that Google had linked to a page with information about registering to vote. While the linked-to page was a little confusing I was still happy to see this. At Google’s core it really wants to be a socially responsible company. With its rapid and enormous growth this has been difficult and they’ve heard about it too. Google is now suffering from the Starbucks syndrome in that it has gone mainstream and those that consider themselves Geeks and first-adopters will reject it based its popularity, but say that it’s for some other reason.

Is it possible for a giant corporation to really be “good” and to produce more good in the world than they take away? I think so, but most of us are damaged from all the bad that we’ve seen from the giants too. Yet I’m by no means a hater of corporations. In fact, I believe that corporations are a large part of what has made America great. I was always a believer in the “Captains of Industry” idea more than the “Robber Baron” concept, but I do think that corporations of today should do more. In that same breath I can say that many are trying. Just because someone is a CEO doesn’t mean that he’s not also an environmentalist – or at the least someone that wants to leave a better world for his kids.

Well there’s your Friday ramble. I’ll talk to you again next week after Congress takes credit for saving the world and blames all that went wrong on someone else.

This is a touching story about a couple that got married at a Dacula, Georgia Waffle House. Story from the Gwinnett Daily Post. This is not a joke, but it is funny.

Click Here to watch and hear the slideshow

DACULA – As the famous twang of Hank Williams Jr. blasted from an SUV stereo Friday afternoon, about 30 folks socialized, sipped soda and puffed on cigarettes. No, this wasn’t a Fourth of July backyard barbecue. It was the run-up to a wedding. In a Waffle House parking lot.

The lucky couple, George “Bubba” Mathis and Pamela Christian – both 23 and employees at the Dacula diner located at the Ga. Highway 316/U.S. Highway 29 interchange – wouldn’t have it any other way.

“I don’t know, it’s something different,” Mathis said while fixing his tie prior to the ceremony.

For years, the couple tried to marry on their Independence Day anniversary. But the bride was always scheduled to work. Instead of waiting any longer – she got the day off at the last minute; Mathis had to report for the morning shift – the couple of nine years decided to seal the deal at work.

The result was what a NASCAR tailgate might be like if Hank Jr. himself stopped by with all his rowdy friends: Loud and proud – country music, storytelling and plenty of Dale Earnhardt paraphernalia – and not an iota of pretentiousness.

Shortly after exchanging vows under the shade of a tree next to the parking lot, both man and wife let out sighs of relief as they picked up their two little blonde girls and chatted with family and friends. But there was not time to relax – the wedding cake had to be cut inside.

“It’s been crazy, madness,” the bride said. “Finally, everything worked out.”

Standing nearby, the father of the newly minted Mrs. Pamela Mathis, William Christopher, wondered if anyone had videotaped the ceremony. He wants to send it in to CMT.

“I think it’s pretty redneck myself,” he said, laughing. “But I’m a redneck anyway, so.”

The couple plans to honeymoon Monday and Tuesday, but then it’s back to work.
