The beta version of Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) has the online advertising world scared that they won’t be able to track traffic or have as much control over ads in the future. Some believe that the new version of IE8 has been designed to hurt Google’s online advertising model.
The new InPrivate feature has been nicknamed “Porn mode” because of it’s ability to hide search paths of users (cookies, cached pages, etc.). Of course, Microsoft is downplaying any negatives of InPrivate and playing up the positives. And it’s true that for users this is a great tool that allows users to opt out sharing info, but it will make it more difficult to accurately track user habits – just about the time we are finally figuring out how to measure it too.

Google Knol has finally launched. If you’re not familiar with Knol yet it’s sort of like Wikipedia except that authorship is highly valued. I’m sure Google would love to own Wikipedia (imagine the ad revenue on all those millions of pages?), but it was never for sale so they did what any good business does and made their own version, and tried to make it better than the original.

I’m still up in the air about whether Knol will beat Wikipedia. Google has the brain power to do just about anything, but Wikipedia has a strong footing and a hard-core following. There will be a large number of people that will reject Google Knol simply because it’s built and managed by a for profit company.

I also see Knol as a place for spammers to congregate by the thousands. It will take some forward thinking to keep Knol from becoming a glorified article directory. Wait, isn’t that what it is already?

I like Google. At least for now. Everyone likes Google until they get banned. What I don’t like about Google is how easy it is to get banned and how vague their reason is for banning you. I just read an interesting article by Robyn Tippins about Google making more enemies. It’s worth checking out.
